Tips to Deal with Pain after a Tummy Tuck
Abdominoplasty or a tummy tuck, is a plastic surgery procedure that flattens the abdomen by removing excess skin and fat and tightening the underlying muscles. -Avoid strenuous exercises: The first six weeks after abdominoplasty are critical for the recovery process of patients. During this period, patients should avoid any physical activity that might tire them. -Maintain simple physical activities: Although strenuous activities are still prohibited, patients can return to their daily routines from the second week after surgery. Taking small walks every day, going to the grocery store, and doing small chores in the house will prevent too much inactivity during the healing process.
-Avoid smoking: If you smoke, you are asked to quit it at least 3 weeks before the surgery. Patients should also avoid the use of tobacco for at least 6 more weeks after the surgery, as nicotine may cause complications during the surgery and negatively affect the healing process. -Wear compression garments: You will be given a compression garment after the surgery to reduce edema and swelling and supports the abdomen. You may need to wear this garment for two weeks to two months depending on how fast recover.
-Eat healthily: Constipation is an unwanted problem that can occur after a tummy tuck. The problem of constipation can damage the stitches and incisions which causes the patient to suffer unnecessarily more pain. To prevent this, patients should eat a balanced and healthy diet. Make sure you consume plenty of vegetables, fruits, and fluids. Pay particular attention to staying hydrated. You can always add a bowl of soup to your meals.
-Keep your incisions clean: You will be instructed on whether you need to change the surgical bandages applied to your incision area, and if so, how often and how to do it. You should be as gentle as possible while doing this and make sure you keep your wound clean.
